Our first lock experience went well.
The kids needed a little bit of extra attention.
The lockmaster gave a conch shell performance (I hear it’s not unusual). I got a cup of coffee and the kids got some donuts and juice as a treat.
And before you know it, we entered into a different world.
Lush green trees tower over our mast–a strange feeling having been in the open. Water the color of dark brewed ale. And beneath it, things go bump…literally. Sunken logs, obstructions, who knows.
The Dismal swamp, despite being very close to roadways, feels like a journey into the heart of a mysterious land.
